The Warden Charter has been developed as a national tool to show local residents, stakeholders and funders that warden schemes are of a high standard, and are valued by residents and other beneficiaries, wherever they are in the country. The Warden Charter also demonstrates to partner agencies that all schemes that are a part of it are of a high standard.

A thirty six question self assessment was completed for the application, the result being the warden charter award was met in full all the areas, including nineteen areas where Wherry wardens were graded as “stronger”.

What do we do?

The wardens provide a high visibility uniformed presence to assist in reducing crime, the fear of crime and Anti Social Behaviour. They act as a reassurance to everyone and, quite often, a first point of contact for any issues you may have.

Environmental issues such as abandoned vehicles, some Anti Social Behaviour and inspecting the tidiness of their patches are the main parts of their job. This can involve working with people to encourage better behaviour by constructive negotiation, or enforcement if necessary. (For example, untaxed vehicles on land owned by Wherry Housing can be removed.)

The Wherry Wardens are also actively involved in the High Profile Estate Inspections conducted by Wherry’s Neighbourhood Officers, along with volunteers from the area and other relevant agencies. (To find out more about volunteering for these and other activities, please see the Get Involved section)

The skills that the wardens have brought to this role are wide and varied. This, coupled with the training provided, has enabled them to perform all of these tasks confidently.
The Wherry Community Wardens have been involved in many community initiatives including:-

“Kickz” - A football in the community project, encouraging youngsters to respect others while enjoying football.

Road Safety Week – An interactive awareness display in both Norwich and Cambridge.

Homewatch - Assisting with setting up schemes, providing an additional link to promoting crime reduction.

Fire safety – A recently started initiative that involves working closely with the Fire Service by providing a fire safety survey, useful advice and, if required, the fitting of smoke detection equipment.

Joint Patrols - Wherry Community Wardens work with the Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams in carrying out joint patrols of various areas. This has proved to be an effective working partnership allowing us to share useful information and is another way of effectively achieving a safer environment for everyone to live in and be a part of.
